SUDBURY, ON (August 20, 2009) --- Métis from across Ontario are set to descend on Sudbury for the Métis Nation of Ontario’s (MNO) 16th Annual General Assembly. The Assembly will include four days of business and cultural activities.
The Métis Nation of Ontario represents Métis people and communities throughout the province through a unique governance system that includes provincial and regionally elected Métis leaders as well as Community Councils. The 2006 Census estimates there are approximately 73,000 Métis living in Ontario, representing the second largest Métis population in Canada.
“Our assemblies are an important part of Métis self-government in the province,” said MNO President Gary Lipinski. “They provide us with a chance to conduct the business of our nation, while also providing an opportunity for Métis in Ontario to come together to share in our distinct culture. They remind us all that we truly are one nation, one people. I am looking forward to a productive Assembly to guide the Métis Nation leadership over the next year.”
During the Annual General Assembly, Métis citizens will receive updates on the activities of the Métis Nation over the past year. The citizens, in turn, provide direction to the elected leadership between elections. This year’s Assembly will include a Métis Youth Forum and feature Métis song, dance and crafts.
Also on the agenda for the 2009 Assembly are significant announcements on Métis education, the Ontario Government’s New Relationship Fund and special recognition of contributions by Métis to the province. Among the dignitaries scheduled to attend are Clem Chartier, President of the Métis National Council; the Honourable Chris Bentley, Attorney General of Ontario; Angus Toulouse, Regional Chief, Chiefs of Ontario, Clint Davis, President, Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business..

The Métis are a distinct Aboriginal people with a unique culture, language and heritage, with an ancestral homeland that extends across Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and into the Northwest Territories and the northwestern United States. The Métis played an instrumental role in the shaping of Canada, and work tirelessly to share their culture, traditions and knowledge of the environment with their fellow Canadians. Today, the Métis live, work, raise their families and pay taxes in communities from Ontario westward. |
